Why does the Gdynia fare depend so much on the address?

Two things set the price: the tariff zone each stretch of the road falls into, and the road itself.

TariffWhere it appliesDay (6:00-22:00)Night, Sundays and holidays
Tariff 1Gdańsk, and Sopot on rides that do not start or end at the airport3.90 PLN/km5.85 PLN/km
Tariff 3Gdynia and stretches outside Gdańsk7.80 PLN/km11.70 PLN/km

Every ride starts at 9 PLN, the total is rounded up to the next 10 PLN, and metered rides under 100 PLN carry a 10 PLN surcharge (already included in the table). The night tariff runs from 22:00 to 6:00 and all day on Sundays and Polish public holidays; see our post on the night tariff. Because Sopot is metered like Gdańsk, a ride from Wrzeszcz to Sopot pier is only about 70 PLN. A kilometre in Gdynia costs twice as much.

Then there is the road. From Gdańsk Główny to Kościuszko Square the navigation picked the S6 ring road at midday: about 37 km and 36-38 minutes. The coastal road through Sopot is about 22 km but took about 43 minutes at that hour. The ring road is longer and more of it lies in tariff 3, hence about 220 PLN. Going the other way, from Gdynia Główna station to Gdańsk Główny, the calculator chose the coastal road and came out at about 130 PLN, while from Kościuszko Square to Long Market it chose the ring road again (about 230 PLN). Two addresses a kilometre apart can differ by 100 PLN, so type in your exact pick-up and drop-off. More local detail is on our Sopot taxi and Gdynia taxi pages.

Taxi from Gdańsk Airport to Sopot and Gdynia

From the airport to central Sopot you pay a fixed price: 120 PLN by day and 150 PLN at night (minibus 140 and 180 PLN). Gdynia has no fixed airport price. The meter runs, so Orłowo and Redłowo come to about 140-160 PLN by day and Kościuszko Square to about 190 PLN; at night expect about 200-280 PLN. All airport fares, including the fixed price to central Gdańsk, are on the airport taxi page.

Evenings are another story. A taxi makes more sense when you are heading back after midnight, when you have suitcases, a pushchair or small children, or when you are a group. Four train tickets to Sopot cost 32 PLN against about 80 PLN for one taxi, so the gap per person is small. A minibus for 5-7 people can be booked online (an 8-seater by phone only), and a child seat or booster costs 40 PLN for rides within the next 24 hours, confirmed by the dispatcher and paid to the driver.
