Westerplatte is a peninsula at the mouth of the Vistula, where on 1 September 1939 at 4:45 the German battleship Schleswig-Holstein opened fire on the Polish Military Transit Depot. Seven days of defence by the 200-strong garrison under Major Sucharski became a symbol of Polish resistance.
